(109.) BRADSTREET SPAFFORD and MARY PAGE.
Married Oct. 16, 1752. She was of Lunenburg, Mass.; settled in Charlestown, N. H., where
he rebuilt the mills in which his father, Capt. John Spafford, and his brother, were
captured by Indians, in 1746. He was a member of Capt. Phineas Stevens's company for the
defence of the frontier, in 1750, and was first lieutenant in Capt. Abel Walker's company,
No. 1, in Col. Bellows's regiment, in 1777. Removed from Charlestown to Piermont, N. H.,
and in 1783 he and his sons Nathan and Asa began the settlement of Fairfax, Vt. He was
moderator of the first town meeting, and the first selectman elected in the town, also a
justice of the peace. He died in Fairfax, and was interred there, but his grave is
unmarked by a head-stone; and it is said that none of the family were living in 1850.

died 1844, aged 90. She died, also at Lennoxville, in 1812, aged 64.

(120.) DEACON ELEAZER SPOFFORD and MARY FLINT.
Married Jan. 4, 1765. She was of Danvers, Mass., a daughter of Elisha and Mirriam (Putnam)
Flint. He built the house in Georgetown long occupied by Jerome Spofford, and on his
removal to Jaffrey, N. H., sold the place to Dr. Amos Spofford. The deed, dated April 20,
1778, is still preserved by Miss Marietta Spofford, of Georgetown. A family tradition
relates that the money for the purchase of the Jaffrey property was quilted into the skirt
of his eldest daughter, who made the journey on horseback. He built a valuable set of
mills on the Contoocook River, at the site of the present factories in East Jaffrey; was
an ingenious mechanic, an upright, godly man, and a good citizen, being especially
interested in the construction of turnpike roads, the great public improvement of that
day. He was for many years a deacon of the First Church in Jaffrey; a leader of the
service of song, being noted for musical taste and ability. Late in life they removed to
East Bradford, Mass. (now Groveland), where he died in 1828. She returned to Jaffrey, and
died Oct. 28, 1832, aged 92. She was very skilful in fancy needle-work.

Dudley Tyler served as a lieutenant during the entire War of the Revolution, but is said
to have failed to receive a pension by leaving the camp at White Plains previous to the
formalities of a discharge, though his duties as a soldier were at an end.

Of Haverhill. He was a student with Dr. Brickett, Sr., of Haverhill; a surgeon in the
Revolution; settled in Wenham, and Beverly, Mass. He must have married a second wife, as
after his death (1786) letters of administration were granted to "Widow Ruth
Spofford." She died 1790.

Of Bradford. He was an ingenious mechanic, and was with Timothy Palmer, of Newburyport
(the celebrated architect who first bridged the Merrimack), in the construction of the
first bridge over the Potomac, at Washington, and inventor of a circular-saw mill. Settled
at Ipswich, and died May 12, 1812; his wife at Georgetown, February, 1802, aged 46.

He was in extensive practice as a physician in Georgetown from 1771 to 1805, and one of
the original members of the Massachusetts Medical Society; a large farmer, very widely
known and highly respected. She was a daughter of Capt. Moses Dole and Ruth Peabody, who
was a daughter of Deacon Nathan Peabody, of Boxford. See note, p. 48, concerning Peabody
and Glover families. Dr. Spofford, the father of this family, died Dec. 20, 1805, his will
being probated Jan. 7, 1806, the inventory of his estate being given at $15,840.43.

(139.) JEREMIAH SPOFFORD and TEMPERANCE SPOFFORD.
Married Feb. 13, 1777; settled in New Rowley, now Georgetown; farmer and millwright. At
the alarm of Lexington, Jeremiah Spofford, the father of this family, was at work upon a
mill in Byfield. He hastened home, and equipping himself, left on foot in pursuit of the
company in command of his father, Capt. Eliphalet Spofford. He overtook them at Topsfield,
and with them joined the army at Cambridge. He removed to Hampstead, N. H., in 1815, and
to Groveland in 1817. He died in 1827; his wife in 1842; and the graves of both are in
Groveland Cemetery.

He was born in Lancaster, Mass., Oct. 19, 1756. His father was killed by the caving in of
a clay-pit in 1765 or 1766. He was bound out by his mother until 21 years of age. When he
had served his time, he enlisted in the Revolutionary Army, and served 13 months. On
returning, he engaged in farm labor for several years; then in driving a team to and from
Boston, carrying freight for the several towns on the route. He was the first one to drive
a four-horse team over West Boston Bridge into Boston.
He married Lucy Robbins, in 1779. She was born in Sterling, Sept. 8, 1758. They lived
in Sterling until March, 1806, removing to Ludlow, Vt.

Of Boxford, Mass. Married Dec. 17, 1755; settled in Sharon, N. H., about 1780, being among
the pioneer settlers of the town. His farm was on East Mountain, near the locality known
as "Spafford's Gap," thus named from Abijah Spafford and his brother Eldad, who
lived on the other side of the mountain in Temple, N. H.
Abijah Spafford died Oct. 19, 1811; Mary his wife, Sept. 9, 1802. Their gravestones may
still be seen in the old cemetery at Sharon.

Married 1765; settled in Wiscasset, Me., where six of their children were born; removed in
1779 to Bedford, N. H., making the passage in a vessel bound to Newburyport, Mass. She was
a person of rare mental qualities and fine personal appearance. She died Nov. 26, 1812, at
Newport, N. H., while on a visit, and was interred there, her gravestone being well
preserved.
William McAllaster was a Revolutionary soldier, and in the battle of Bunker Hill. He
died at Bedford, N. H., Feb. 17, 1787.

He was a Revolutionary soldier in the company of Capt. Jonas Locke, and spoken of as one
of the Deerfield Minute Men.
He was in the siege of Boston, and participated in the battle of Bunker Hill, June 17,
1775. He died in Buckland, Mass., about 1835 or 1840. His wife was born 1752, a sister of
Deacon Thomas Sanderson, of Whately, Mass.

Second marriage with WIDOW ESTHER RUDDOCK, whose former husband was Edward Ruddock, who
died on the passage from England, leaving her with a son, Edward, who married Martha,

married in camp, in the presence of his regiment. He united with the church at Whately,
Mass., March 16, 1794; his wife, Oct. 18, 1795. She died at Hawley, Mass., April 24, 1820,
aged 71.

Benjamin Spofford married a second wife, with whom he lived fifty years, who was the
widow, first, of David Barnard, of Watertown, Mass., who died in 1775; and then of Hon.
David Wood, of Boxford, Mass., her acquaintance with whom was formed while he was a member
of the General Court, then in session in Watertown. She was a daughter of Phineas Warren,
of Waltham, a woman of strong mind and massive physique.
A characteristic incident of her early life, as related by herself, was transcribed by
her grandson, Benjamin S. Barnes, of Boxford, who kindly permits its use here:--
"The day of the battle of Lexington, I was living in Watertown. The ablebodied men
had all gone to the battle, leaving only women, children, and a few old men, at home,
anxiously awaiting the result. Toward night several women came running to my house,
crying, 'Mrs. Barnard, the Regulars are coming!' I looked up the street, and saw a redcoat
riding toward us on a horse. He came up and inquired if that was the road to Boston. I
stepped to his side, took the horse by the head with one hand, and the soldier by the
collar with the other, saying, 'You villain; you've been killing our folks, and deserve
death yourself' (my husband and five brothers had gone to the fight). I pulled him to the
ground, while he begged piteously for his life. I then gave him up to some old men, who
took him to the tavern and kept him till the proper authorities had him exchanged for one
of our men. It was asserted that he was wounded, and was trying to find his way to Boston,
having stolen the horse from the roadside, where it had been tied by its owner, Col.
Stedman, of Cambridge, who had ridden him to Lexington that morning, whither he had gone
to fight for his country. He was made glad, a few days after, by the recovery of his
valuable horse."
Benjamin Spofford died Feb. 19, 1836. Lydia, his wife, died Sept. 6, 1839, aged 95.

Married in 1783; resided Linebrook, Mass.
He was noted for musical taste and ability, a characteristic inherited by many of his
descendants. As a soldier in the Revolution, he was brave and patriotic.
His ensign's commission is still preserved, bearing date Aug. 24, 1776, and signed by
Benjamin Franklin, the noted statesman and philosopher.

"Gen. Jonathan Spafford and Thomas Chittenden commenced the settlement of
Williston, Vt., in 1774, locating on the river, and taking large tracts of land adjoining
each other. During the war the settlement was abandoned, but they returned in 1786.
Jonathan Spafford was deacon, and was the first representative from the town in the
Legislature. He was from Connecticut, and died at an advanced age in Upper Canada."

It is probable that Gen. Spafford was twice married, his other wife being his cousin,

children, David, Jr., and Betsey, were reared by their aunt, Mrs. Abijah Pratt, of
Tinmouth, Vt.

Resided at Tinmouth, Vt., afterward at Canaan, Columbia County, N. Y., and then at
Lowville, Lewis County, N. Y., where he died April 24, 1823, in the 71st year of his age.
"Though his last illness was very severe, he was never heard to utter a complaint;
and in the last struggle of expiring nature, blest with full reason, he was favored with a
calm and easy exit from time. His remains were interred upon his own farm, the spot being
selected by himself on the border of Black River. He was a native of Salisbury, Conn., and
one of the first settlers of Tinmouth, Vt. Blest with a sound understanding, great
firmness of purpose, and a character for integrity, he was soon called to stations of
trust and responsibility. When the contests about State sovereignty were merged in a
national one for independence, he took the field against foes and traitors, at the head of
a fine company of militia, rendering important services in the taking of Ticonderoga,
Crown Point, and in the battle of Bennington. He was with his company under Allen and
Arnold in the taking of Ticonderoga, in 1775, and was by them directed to join in the
expedition under Colonel Warner against Crown Point; but he reached that important post
before Colonel Warner, and received himself the sword of the commandant, which is still in
Col. Spafford's family." Mary Baldwin, his wife, was born April 20, 1750; died Sept.
9, 1842; interred in the West Street Cemetery, Rutland, Vt.

1794; she died Feb. 1, 1795, aged 31.

Married April 16, 1789; he held the rank of lieutenant in the Revolutionary Army.
CHILD.
784. FREDERICK. In company with a man named David Jackman,
he was crossing the chain bridge at Deer Island,
near Newburyport, Mass., at night, Feb. 6, 1827, when
the bridge fell. He escaped unhurt from the fall of
forty feet into the water, lived three years afterward,
and died in Groveland, March 11, 1830, aged 39. His
companion in danger also escaped with his life.
(251.) SAMUEL SPOFFORD and DEBORAH ROBINSON.
Married Oct. 6, 1793; settled in Boxford, Mass. She was of Andover, Mass. He was drowned
in "Great Pond," in the winter of 1833, and it will be observed that, by a very
singular fatality, three other members of his family lost their lives by drowning, the
casualties being quite separate and distinct, each from the others.
