"There were giants in those days." The six sons
of this family, who all lived and died in New York State, averaged six feet in height.

and Susannah (Hemenway) Rand.
Rev. L. A. Spofford was born at Jaffrey, N. H., Nov. 5,
1785. He graduated at Middlebury College, and was first settled at Gilmanton, N. H. He was
a devoted Christian pastor in Gilmanton, Brentwood, Lancaster, and Atkinson, N. H.,
Chilmark, Martha's Vineyard, and missionary in several Western States, and founder of
several churches. He died at Rockport, Ind., Sept. 27, 1855. His wife died at
Williamsburg, Ohio, Feb. 25, 1851, aged 63 years.

“Dr. Spofford fitted for college at Phillips Academy, Andover, and entered Harvard in
the class which graduated 1812. While in college he was pre-eminent as a mathematical
scholar, carrying off the 'Great Slate,' which in those days was accorded to the best
mathematician of the class, passing from hand to hand as a college heirloom. The contest
in this case was between himself and the late learned Judge Peleg Sprague.
“Dr. Spofford pursued the studies of his profession
with his father and with his brother, finishing his course at the Philadelphia College. On
receiving his diploma, he joined his brother in practice at Rowley, but in 1816 he removed
to Newburyport, where he remained in active practice for more than fifty years, having
withdrawn therefrom only a few years before his death.
“To spcak of Dr. Spofford's skill and attainments in
his profession is simply to rehearse a universally admitted fact while he was living,--one
which will long have a traditional verification in all the country-side where his arduous
practice lay, including Newburyport and all the adjacent towns. Called often in
consultation with other leading physicians of the metropolis and of other States, and
having had the care of many illustrious patients, there was that just appreciation of his
wisdom and learning, of his zeal and fidelity, his quick perceptions and intuitive
resolutions, which made his name known and respected far beyond the local limits of his
professional arena. Always a student and lover of scientific inquiry, he brought to the
augmentation of his efficiency as a physician great knowledge in all the departments of
natural science, a mind balanced with that equipoise derived from mathematical studies and
the tender feelings of his sympathetic nature.”
“He was a very active citizen; personally never moved
by political aspirations; friend, admirer, and enthusiastic supporter of Caleb Cushing;
co”??perated with Mr. Wm. Bartlett in introducing cotton manufacture into
Newburyport, acting as one of the building committee and directors of the Bartlett Mills;
member and one of the founders of the Merrimack Humane Society. For a number of years he
was one of the overseers of Harvard University.”
Dr. Spofford died in Newburyport, Jan. 19, 1872, aged
nearly 85, and was interred with Masonic honors, having attained the highest degrees of
that Order.
“Mrs. Frances Maria Spofford was born in Plymouth,
England, in the year 1801 Her father was John Mills, the poet and actor, a Scotchman,
whose family in several branches had won dramatic and artistic eminence. Mr. Mills was an
immediate descendant of Christopher Kilby, long the agent of the colony of Massachusetts
and of the city of Boston at the court of Great Britain, and for whom, in acknowledgment
of his liberal donation at the time of a conflagration, Kilby Street was named; another
descendant in the same generation being the seventh Duchess of Argyl. That Dalrymple, who
was the friend and patron of Burns, was the first husband of Mrs. Spofford's grandmother,
and her grandmother's near relative was the wife of James Otis, the patriot. Her mother
was the daughter of James Mothershead Errington, and the only surviving relatives of this
connection are the family of which Frances Eleanor Trollope, the wife of T. Adolphus
Trollope, is a distinguished member. Orphaned in childhood, she became the adopted
daughter of Mrs. Susannah Rawson, the author of "Charlotte Temple" and several
other prominent works of our earlier literature, and at whose famous school many of the
leading women of the past generations received a superior education; a school to whose
management Mrs. Spofford succeeded, although but for a brief season, as she married, at an
early age, Mr. George Lord, a brother of the wife of Rev. John Pierpont, the poet, by whom
she bore one child, Mrs. Georgiana Hall, a contributor to our current literature. In her
early days Mrs. Spofford was of rare personal beauty, and throughout her life she retained
a remarkable dignity and grace of manner.”

(401.) SEWALL SPOFFORD and ELIZABETH NELSON.
Married May 21, 1818. She was a daughter of Nathaniel and Sally (Chaplin) Nelson; she died
July 2, 1828. He built the house formerly occupied by Harrison Spofford, removing thence
to the one long occupied by Col. Daniel Spofford; purchased in 1850 the "old
farm," which had been leased by the town or first parish of Rowley a hundred and
fifty years. The early life of Sewall Spofford was spent in ag??icultural pursuits, a few
weeks at the district school in winter comprising all his early educational advantages.
In middle life he was engaged in the business of road
building in various parts of the county of Essex, the county commissioners being
frequently called to lay out new highways previous to the advent of railroads.
He always manifested much interest in public affairs, took
a prominent part in procuring the act of incorporation of the town of Georgetown, and
served on its early boards of selectment and assessors.
He was a natural mechanic, and took a lively interest in
all new inventions, being the first man in his native town to use a cast-iron plough.
In politics he was a Whig of the stanchest kind. He
believed in a high protective tariff and the consequent development of home industries and
home markets, but he was not an original abolitionist, or a believer in Charles Sumner,
until after the Brooks assault; that affair demonstrated to his mind that slavery and
freedom could n't live together, and if either must die, slavery should go to the wall;
consequently, he ever after acted with the Republican party.
In early life he espoused the cause of Freemasonry, and
bore aloft its sacred emblems throughout the darkest days of its New England history. He
took the Royal Arch degrees, and was buried with Masonic honors by the Haverhill Pentucket
Chapter of Royal Arch Masons, Nov. 6, 1865.
The latter part of his life was devoted exclusively to the
business of farming, and his purchase of the Parish Farm on which the residence of John
Spofford, the first representative of the family in America, was located, has more
particularly identified his name with the history of the Spofford family.
