having been several times elected to the Massachusetts Senate. He early exhibited marked
literary tastes, and has written copiously for the journals, his most recent papers being
a series of forcible articles on the fisheries question. His talent for poetical
composition, had it been possible to cultivate it amid the pressing cares of a busy life,
would have given him rank among American poets.
"Mrs. Spofford, a native of Calais, Me., a daughter of the
late Joseph Newmarch and Sarah (Bridges) Prescott, is the gifted and well-known authoress
of 'The Amber Gods'; 'Azarian'; 'New England Legends'; 'Poems'; 'The Marquis of Carabas';
'Art Decoration applied to Furniture'; 'Sir Rohan's Ghost'; 'The Servant-girl Question';
'The Thief in the Night'; and many other important writings."
