Col. Hatch, a native of New York City, settled in Charleston, S.
C., in early life, and, being a man of military tastes and great executive ability, was
called into the Confederate service in the very beginning of the late war, and holds the
first commission issued with rank of colonel. He did much work as topographical engineer
in the interior of the State and on the coast, more especially in the defences of
Charleston Harbor and other approaches to the city; also serving for a term on the staff
of Gen. Beauregard.
In civil life a merchant, he has, with his son, Melvin Spofford Hatch, been
instrumental in discovering the value of the South Carolina phosphates; and he reports
himself as having, since the war, occupied himself "with dams, mills, wood-working,
and farming in the mountains, as a necessity of Spofford blood."
Mrs. Hatch is a daughter of William and Susannah (Taylor) Bell,
of Charleston, S. C., and descended from an old North of Ireland family from near Belfast.

N. H.
Amos Catlin Spafford was born in Adams, Jefferson County, N. Y.,
Sept. 14, 1824. His father was Dr. John Spafford, a physician of ability and a man very
much loved by the people through the wide section of country in which he practised. He
died in 1827, leaving the care of the children to the mother. She was a woman of strong
character, and in spite of delicate health she managed her boys with wisdom tempered with
love, and although she survived her husband but six years, she had made such an impression
on the character of her son that it influenced all his after life.
After the death of his mother, he spent two years at the village
school and two years at the Black River Institute of Watertown, N. Y., and one year at an
academy at Castleton, Vt. In September, 1839, with his sister, Mrs. Jason Marsh, he made
the journey from New York to Illinois, travelling by stage-coach, canal, and steamboat. At
Chicago they met John Spafford, who, with his brother Charles and Jason Marsh, had gone
West in advance to select a suitable home. The remainder of the journey, from Chicago to
Rockford, a distance of about one hundred miles, was made in a lumber wagon.
The time from 1839 to 1846 was spent on a farm. In those days
their only market was Chicago, to which they hauled their grain, and considered themselves
fortunate if they received fifty cents a bushel for wheat and one
dollar and fifty cents per hundred for pork. From that time (1846) until 1850, Catlin
Spafford engaged in mercantile business. In 1848, he, with others, built a saw-mill, the
first attempt to utilize the water power of Rock River, which has since become the source
of the prosperity of Rockford.
About this time he, with many others, became a victim of the
"gold fever," and on the afternoon of March 25, 1850, he started for California,
leaving behind him his bride of the morning. He arrived in Sacramento about the 1st of
August, having spent four months in the trials and hardships incident to a journey across
the plains at that early day. After two years spent in gold mining he returned to
Rockford, which has been his home ever since. In 1854 he entered the banking business, and
since 1864 has been president of the Third National Bank of Rockford. He has been closely
identified with the business interests of the city, and with many of the enterprises
contributing to its prosperity and welfare.

present residence (1888) Jerusalem, Palestine, where they are at the head of an American
colony, comprising, in 1887, some twenty-five people, holding a somewhat unusual phase of
religious belief. Their home is described by a recent traveller as being "just within
the Damascene gate, in a handsome house, for Jerusalem, but queer and quaint to American
eyes, built for a harem by a wealthy Mussulman, the rooms being bright and pretty, with
carved olivewood ornaments, pressed flowers, and home-like decorations." These
colonists are full of alms deeds, ministering to the wants of needy pilgrims and the poor
of the Holy City. Mrs. Spafford is a native of Stavanger, Norway.

He went early in life to the West Indies, and thence to Porto Cabello, Venezuela, where he
built up a large mercantile business. In 1847 he came to New York, where he remained in
active life, holding a high position as a man of wealth and influence till his death,
which occurred July 30, 1884, at the age of 75 years.
Mrs. Phelps was of ancient Spanish lineage, born Feb. 22, 1816,
in Porto Cabello, where the marriage took place Aug. 5, 1831. She died in New York City,
Apr. 4, 1872, her obsequies being solemnized in St. Ann's (Catholic) Church.

the almost princely hospitalities of its illustrious owners. Mrs. Carroll died
in New York City,

was appointed, in 1885, governor of Idaho.
