became Mrs. Russell, of Elwood, Ill.

engineer, employed at different times by Vermont and Massachusetts Railroad, the Troy and
Greenfield, Troy and Boston, Vermont Central, Alabama and Tennessee, and others. He was
the inventor of Spafford's railway protective signals for drawbridges. At the time of his
death, which occurred at Philadelphia, Jan. 25, 1855, aged 34 years, 3 months, he was
general superintendent of Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Baltimore road. His widow married
Charles Stearns; resided at Northfield, Mass. Mr. Spafford left one son."
