Married at Norwich, Conn., Aug. 11, 1867, he being at one time librarian of the Otis
Library there. Mr. Spofford entered the Union Army, Sept. 21, 1861, served in Burnside's
expedition in North Carolina, fought in the engagements at Roanoke Island, Newbern, and
Fort Macon, and later at South Mountain and Antielam, where be lost an arm, being again
wounded at Walthall Junction. He was promoted to sergeant, Aug. 1, 1862, and
sergeant-major, Jan. 1, 1863. He was afterward in government employ in Washington, D. C.,
where he died Sept. 16, 1878.

Mr. Spofford served in the Union Army during the Rebellion, being less than nineteen years
when honorably discharged at the close of the war. He was wounded by a minie-ball, which
entered his right side and passed through both lungs, lodging in the left armpit. He was
appointed, by President Garfield, as postmaster of Huntington, West Virginia, whence he
removed to Boise City, Idaho; married Sept. 23, 1868.

"Married Feb. 13, 1854. She was of New Haven, Conn. He was born in Sharon, N. H.,
Oct. 3, 1826, and learned the machinist trade in the adjoining town of Peterboro. He
removed to Boston in 1846, and there gained that thorough mastery of the laws of machinery
which enabled him in after years to perfect his numerous inventions. At the age of
thirty-one, he was made superintendent of the Ladd, Webster & Company Sewing Machine
Manufactory, and from that time until his retirement from active business in 1885, his
life was an extremely active one. He was soon recognized as a leading mind in his
vocation, and his inventions and improvements of machinery have placed him in the foremost
rank of inventive geniuses. During the war he superintended the construction of tools for
making the government rifles while with the Providence Tool Company. From 1860 to 1867, he
was occupied in developing, perhaps, the most notable of his inventions. These consisted
of a set of machines for preparing bristles for brush-makers' use. They are very
complicated in their nature, and are still used in their original form largely in
Baltimore. They stand alone, and have no competitors in excellence and time-saving
properties for combing, dragging, and preparing the bristlcs ready for the brush. For the
eight years previous to his retirement, he was superintendent of the Peet Valve Company.
He now resides on his farm at Milton, Mass."
