SUPPLEMENTARY RECORDS
THE records of families here introduced were received too late for use in their
appropriate places, or have baffled the effort to establish for them an unquestioned
location in the order of the generations.
The incorrect statement on page 84, concerning the early death of the wife of Amos
Spafford (234), arose from a misapprehension of a passage in a letter of his, dated at
Orville, Ohio, Sept. 9, 1785, in which, beside allusions to his own work and his surveys
that season, a hundred and fifty miles to the north, he speaks of his three children --
all he then had -- as claimants on the love of their aunt, to whom the letter was written,
and who, it was hastily assumed, was thus placed in the position of fostermother to them.
The following record throws a different light upon this matter. The number of the
generations is indicated, when known, by the small figures at the right of names.
